With your luxury bespoke holiday and flights booked, it’s time to start planning ahead for what can sometimes feel like the most demanding part of getting ready for your vacation – deciding what clothes to pack! But choosing your travel outfits doesn’t need to be stressful. Here to make things easier are some of the best tips for putting together a capsule holiday wardrobe.
- Pack smart
We’re all guilty of packing too much for our holiday, or not making the best use of our limited baggage allowance. Try to resist that temptation to take everything you own, and choose low-maintenance, crease-resistant clothing that takes up minimal space and weight. Take versatile pieces that can all be mixed and matched together rather than a whole variety of outfits and you’ll be amazed how much less you need.
Choose your fabrics carefully too. Natural fabrics wrinkle more but are cooler and more breathable than synthetics; a cotton or linen blend is a good choice for warmer and humid climates, and cotton or viscose jersey is wonderfully crease-resistant and easy to pack and wear. What more could you ask for!
- Fly in comfort
Get your holiday off to a good start by carefully choosing what you’re going to wear on the flight itself. Comfort, style, and versatility are essential ingredients for the perfect travel outfit. Choose something that’s going to be comfortable to wear for hours sitting on the plane but will still look good when you arrive at your destination.
Breathable natural fabrics are your travel friends. Jeans don't breathe or stretch well so choose the much more comfortable option of stretch jersey or crease-free lightweight trousers with an elasticated or drawstring waist. Pair them with an unstructured top or loose tunic for maximum ease. And don’t forget to layer! The recycled air in a plane can get surprisingly chilly but if you’re heading for warmer climes it could be hot when you step off the plane.

- On the beach
If you’re heading for the beach or planning some poolside relaxation, take the time to find swimwear that boosts your confidence and makes you feel and look your best. Whether you choose a classic well-cut swimsuit, a versatile two-piece tankini or one of the new retro-inspired swim dresses, there’s a fabulous range available nowadays for every age and body shape. Don’t forget something to slip on over your swimwear too. Kaftans, overshirts and sarongs in gorgeous prints are beautifully versatile and lightweight when you want to cover up a little on the beach, and can often be dressed up for sightseeing and even a casual evening out too.
- Keep your feet happy
Footwear is one of the worst offenders for taking up a lot of room in your luggage, so try and limit yourself to just two or three carefully chosen pairs. Sandals are a must for beach holidays of course, and a nice pair of lightweight pumps will see you through a day’s sightseeing and a casual evening dinner. The main thing is that your footwear should be well-fitting, easy care and perfectly comfortable, whether you’re trekking a mountain trail, hitting the shops or strolling along a beach.
Accessories are a fun and practical way to make a limited holiday wardrobe stretch much further. A few key jewellery pieces or a pretty belt can lift a kaftan from beach cover-up to eveningwear. A sarong makes a pretty wrapped skirt and can double up as a shawl to cover your arms. A simple pair of palazzo trousers and tunic top can be dressed up with a lightweight scarf or pashmina for cooler evenings.
