Borneo is a truly special place, just waiting to be discovered. Why not make your next holiday destination Borneo, just look at the many treasures it has to offer…
As the third largest island on Earth and straddling the equator, Borneo is actually divided up into Malaysian, Indonesian and Brunei territory. Each and every corner of Borneo is brim-full of magical wilderness, stunning flora and fauna and an experience of a lifetime waiting to be had. There are literally thousands of species of flowering plants and trees (15,000 in total!) with an abundance of exotic mammals and resident birds to discover. For lovers of wildlife there are few places in the world that can rival Borneo and its thriving rainforest habitats. Borneo was, well, truly born to satisfy the lust for adventure and natural beauty that intoxicates many travellers around the world and calls them each and every year to experience this magical realm.
Some Key Borneo facts
- Borneo’s rainforests are the oldest one Earth at 130 million years of age.
- Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in SE Asia. It stands at a staggering 4100m high!
- Alongside Sumatra, Borneo remains the only place on Earth to see and experience Orangutans in the wild.
- Borneo is one of the world’s best places to dive. The abundance of life is breath-taking and sharks, turtles, thriving coral gardens and an abundance of wrecks offer an unparalleled scuba experience.
- Borneo’s wildlife diversity takes some beating! Borneo provides a home to over 210 mammal species (44 of which are endemic – which means they are not found anywhere else on Earth), 420 species of birds (37 endemic), 100 species of amphibians and 394 fish species (19 endemic).
About Borneo’s Primates
The island’s native Orangutans are now under heavy protection, making encounters in the island’s sanctuaries all the more special. Look out for Proboscis Monkeys; a particularly interesting primate species, which is endemic (unique) to Borneo. This monkey is also known as the long-nosed monkey and as always in Borneo, have your camera at the ready, for this charming little fellow can provide a great photo opportunity.
Diversity and Uniqueness
Visiting Borneo is like visiting the epicentre of evolution, with its abundance of endemic species, some wildly different and others evolved to occupy subtly different niches. The remaining swathes of rainforest in Borneo offer the only truly wild sanctuary to the endangered Orangutan, while turtles nest around the coastline and the world’s largest fish species – the whale shark often makes an appearance in the waters surrounding the island, which would make any boat trip truly memorable.
A Diver’s Paradise
Borneo is renowned as being among the very elite of dive locations on the planet. The island’s best dive sites are regarded as being: Sipadan, Sipadan-Kapalai Dive Resort on Kapalai Island and Lankayan Islan Dive Resort.
Let’s take a look at these dive sites in closer detail
Sipadan is a renowned dive site in the diving community. It offers the possibility of experiencing an unbelievable array of technicoloured reef fish, shoals of knife-like barracudas, encounters with curious hammerhead sharks, sea turtles and plenty more besides. Sipadan itself is a small rainforest covered tropical island, but is better known for its diving and is considered to rank as one of the top two or three diving destinations in the world! A must do for any committed divers. Unfortunately you can no longer stay on the island due to its protection, but divers needn’t worry, as Sibadan-Kapalai Dive Resort has been built to the highest of standards on stilts on a sandbar! This really adds something special to your holiday.
As well as providing accommodation for Sipadan divers, Sibadan-Kapalai Dive Resort, which is built on the shallow sandbanks of the Ligitan Reefs, offers its own more entry level diving opportunities and much more besides. The resort itself was purpose-built for optimal comfort and with no land in sight and a mile-long sandbank of powdery white sand, it really is a veritable paradise. While on the resort you will be treated to wonderful cuisine and you can rest your head on a luxurious bed in an elegant wooden chalet, with huge private balconies on which to rest and read in the soothing sun. While the diving is easy and shallow, it remains quite spectacular as the sandy bottom and the sparse coral heads host an amazing array of small, often yet-to-be-classified, colourful subjects, rendering the diving here an unforgettable experience. The Resort offers three dives a day as well as day trips to Sipadan & Mabul.
Lankayan Island Dive Resort is perfect for those wanting the opportunity to dive without the whole holiday being geared around that particular pursuit. Lankayan is a tiny, but beautiful island, an hour and a half boat ride north of Sandakan. Lankayan has been assimilated as part of an immense Marine Protected Area in keeping with the eco-tourism concept. Unpopulated and covered by thick tropical island vegetation on its topside, this peaceful, untouched slice of paradise is ringed by an endless pure white, sandy beach benefitting from elegant accommodation in the form of some exquisite chalets and bungalows. All 16 chalets are constructed from wood and are perfectly appointed, benefitting from seafront location and double-occupancy. The bungalows are equally charming. This site is ideal for people seeking tranquillity and relaxation as well as the chance to dive.
